Pulley ramblings
I went digging for my 6312 crank pulley and couldn’t find it but I did discover another 8509 water pump pulley.
I kept digging and pulled out four upper pulleys and the unknown 2 V lower pulley and decided to document them as best I could.
This pulley came off of the original 302 that powered me and the car back to California. This pulley is PN D2OE-8509-AA and was surprised with what I found out when I did a search on the number.
It turns out that the pulley does not belong on a 1969 302 from a Mustang. This particular widget comes from a 70-74 351W and 302 from a Torino.
I shouldn’t be too surprised. This pulley had a slight misalignment with the lower pulley on the 302 it was bolted to and it had the same problem with the Cammer set up.
This is pulley C8AE-8A528-B and despite the 8 after the “C”, this is listed for a 1969 Mustang with a 390. I’m a little stumped.
The C8AE-8A528-B is 7 3/8” in diameter and here it is mounted on the engine with the single V lower pulley. If the ratio between the two is supposed to be a minimum of 1:1 and this pulley is for an FE engine, I don’t see how I could fit a bigger lower pulley and get to this magical 1:1 ratio using this big-ass upper pulley. There ain’t the real estate to pull that off.
This is the other 8509 upper pulley. This is near identical to the pulley I just bought on eBay. The number on this one is C5AE-8509-B and it’s listed for a 65-67 Mustang with a 289.
I’m not sure how I came to owning this one but I can guess that I didn’t use it initially because I was under the false impression that the water pump is supposed to spin slower than the crank so this one was shelved and I went in search of a bigger pulley which I obviously found.
C9OE-8509-D listed as belonging to a 1969 Mustang with a 390. This should be perfect for my application.
As you can see, the pulleys are near identical. There are some very slight visual differences but there’s no reason I can’t use these two interchangeably. Just to say I have SOMETHING that belongs on this car, I’ll probably go with this pulley. I’ll media blast it and paint bomb it to pretty it up a little.
I’ve been trying to research the origins of this beauty but the numbers don’t match anything Ford. A friend of mine suggested that it could possibly be aftermarket. In many ways it’s very similar to the 6312 pulley.
I got tired of looking at the pulley like this so I stuck it in the media blaster and…
Pimped it out a little.
Ford racing engines were black and gold. This may not be the gold they envisioned but it’s better than that rusted look it was sporting before.
